  Chapter One

It was the worst date he’d ever been on.

Well, okay, maybe not the worst date. The time he’d gotten food poisoning and spent most of the night in the bathroom had been pretty bad.

Then there was the time his date took it upon herself to drop under the table to give him a blow job and hit her head, causing her to nearly pass out.

Still, this date was up there in the top five. Dylan had been looking forward to tonight for so long. He’d patiently bided his time, waiting for just the right moment to make his move.

The first four times he’d asked Tilly out, she’d said no. The fifth time had been the charm.

  Sort of.

It was clear she was uncomfortable. She looked gorgeous, yet she kept fiddling with her hair and glancing around nervously. If she didn’t stop worrying at her lip with her teeth, she’d soon have no lipstick left.

And he quite liked that shade of red. In fact, he’d like to see her in nothing but that red lipstick.

  Down boy.

Dylan attempted to calm his rising need, but it was nearly impossible. He’d wanted her for a long time.

Tilly glanced around the restaurant again.

“This is a really fancy place,” she said quietly.

Was it? Dylan looked around. He guessed this place could be classified as fancy with its white tablecloths, linen napkins, and snooty waiters.

Stupid mistake. Now she was going to think he liked all this posh crap when he was just as happy with a burger and a beer.

“Bit much, isn’t it?” he said with a grin.

Tilly’s eyes widened as she stared at him in surprise. “You don’t like it here?”

“No, not really,” he replied, deciding honesty was probably the best policy.

“Oh, then why come here?” she asked, clearly puzzled.

Good question. “I guess I was trying to impress you.”

“You don’t have to do anything to impress me. I already think you’re amazing.” She blushed and he smiled.

“You do?” He leaned forward and placed his hand over hers where it rested on the table. “What’s so amazing about me?”

  “You fought for our country.”

“I did. Along with a lot of other men and women.”

“And they are all amazing people,” she said.

“They are. Is that the only thing you find amazing about me?” He ran his thumb over the smooth skin of her hand.

“No.” Tilly lowered her gaze to the table.

Screw the stupid table setting. Dylan stood, and pulled his chair around the table so he was sitting at a right angle to her. He drew a few curious looks from other diners and some frowns from the wait staff, but he didn’t care.

“Tilly,” he said, reaching out and tipping her chin up with his fingers. “What else do you find so amazing about me?”

Since the day he’d met her, Dylan had wanted her with a desperation that surprised him. However, he’d soon realized that coming on too strong would have pushed her away. He’d heard the rumors about her past—about how she’d been abused by her former Dom. He knew he had to go slow. But he had a lot of patience. The best things in life didn’t come easily.

Dylan reached out and gently pulled her poor, abused lip free from her teeth. Leaning in, he kissed her softly.

“There’s no need to be nervous,” he told her quietly. “I won’t tell anyone.”

No need to be nervous? Was he flipping kidding her? She’d been nervous about this date all week. Why the hell had she said yes?

Because Dylan was the sexiest man she’d ever met. He featured in every one of her erotic fantasies. Plus he’d worn her down. She hadn’t the heart to say no to him for a fifth time. She got the feeling he’d just keep asking until she said yes.

She had no idea why he was so persistent. There was nothing special about her.

Tilly knew she’d nearly ruined the date with her nerves. She’d barely said more than a handful of words all night. It didn’t help that this restaurant was fancier than she was used to. What if she did something wrong and embarrassed him? It would be mortifying.

“Tilly,” he said with just a hint of firmness. “Tell me.”

Dylan had been sweet all night. But she hadn’t forgotten his dominant side. When she’d first met him, she’d been completely floored. Like an idiot, she’d just stared at him, her mouth dry, her heart racing. She’d never had a reaction to a man like that before. He was just too hot for her peace of mind. He looked as though he spent hours at the gym, chiseling his body until it was hard, muscular.

To top it all off, he was a nice guy. Gorgeous, smart and dominant without being a jerk about it. Totally and utterly out of her league. She had never dreamed that he would return her interest.

  Tilly cleared her throat.

Dylan leaned in close. “Tell me,” he whispered, his breath tickling her sensitive skin. A shiver ran over her body. “What do you find so amazing about me?”

Oh God, why had she let that slip out? “Umm, you’re smart. You’re resourceful. You’re athletic.”

“Athletic?” He chuckled. “I guess I am.”

Tilly wished she had the courage to run her hand over his arm, to squeeze those firm muscles.

“You know what I think?” he asked.

She shook her head, her ability to think was totally impaired by how close he was.

“I think you’re the amazing one, Tilly. You never have a bad word to say about anyone. You’re sexy, smart and a total sweetheart.”

Wow, he thought she was sexy?

“Want to get out of here?” he asked, sitting back.

“And go where?” she asked warily. She didn’t intend to have sex with him, not on their first date. She’d learned the perils of falling too hard and fast for a man. Hell, after the disastrous start to this date, she’d be lucky if he ever asked her out again.

“We’ll go get a burger and a beer at a bar I know.”

That sounded way more fun than sticking around here, but they couldn’t just leave.

“We can’t do that,” she said, looking around the room nervously.

“Why not? It’s not as though we’ve ordered yet.”

“Yes, but the waiter is probably relying on our tip.”

“I’ll leave the snooty waiter a nice tip.” Dylan grabbed his wallet and put a generous amount of cash on the table. “Come on.”

He stood and held out his hand. Tilly slipped her hand into his l
arger, warm one and let him lead her from the restaurant. She couldn’t quite meet the waiter’s gaze as they passed him. But, as they left the restaurant, she breathed a sigh of relief.

  ***

Dylan rested his hand on the small of Tilly’s back as he steered her through the noisy, packed bar to the booths that sat along the back wall. He waved at a few people who called out.

“Regular here, huh?” she asked as he helped her into the booth, then slipped in beside her.

He grinned. “They have the best burgers in town.”

  “That’s a pretty big boast.”

Now that he’d gotten her away from that stuffy restaurant she seemed more at ease. A waitress came over and they ordered.

“Did I tell you how much I like this dress?” he asked, running his finger over her shoulder. The little black dress hugged her in all the right places and even plunged down enough to give him a view of what he knew were a pair of magnificent breasts.

Although he would have preferred her in something bright. He didn’t like the idea of her trying to fade into the background or hiding her curves thinking that she needed to slim herself down or something equally as stupid.

She was perfect just as she was.

The waitress brought over two huge burgers accompanied by fries and salad. Tilly’s eyes widened.

“Wow, that could feed a family of four,” she said. “How do you even eat it?”

He chuckled and grabbed it with both hands. “Like this.” Dylan took a huge bite.

Tilly smiled and reaching over with a napkin, wiped some sauce off his chin.

“Thanks,” he murmured after he’d swallowed his mouthful.

  “You’re welcome,” she said shyly.

They ate in silence until Tilly sat back with a groan.

“I’m so full.” She’d barely made a dent in the burger. “I feel so bad that I can’t eat more. You were right, though. It was delicious.”

After the waitress had taken her leftovers away to bag them up, Dylan slid closer to her. The music cranked up a little as the lights dimmed.

  “Want to dance?” he asked.

  “I don’t dance very well.”

“That’s okay. Just follow my lead.” He stood and held out his hand to her, waiting patiently. “Trust me, Tilly. I’ll take care of you.”

Finding himself ridiculously nervous, he sighed with relief as she took his hand. He didn’t want to scare her off by moving too fast. At the same time, he didn’t intend for them to just be friends or any such bullshit.

Despite the awkward beginning to their night, he still knew what he wanted. Tilly. In his bed. In his life.

Once they were on the dance floor, he pulled her in close. As he swayed to the music, she relaxed.

His dick throbbed with the feel of her against him. All that softness and heat. A hint of lavender teased him. He steered them around the dance floor. She felt so tiny in his arms; the top of her head didn’t even reach his chin.

Dylan slipped both arms around her as a slow, dreamy song came on.

Tilly gazed up at him with a smile.

He ran his finger under her eyes. She looked tired. He knew she worked long hours as a waitress in a diner, as well as waitressing at the club in lieu of paying fees.

He stepped back slightly and cupped her face. Bending, he kissed her lightly. If he’d been somewhere less public, he would have deepened the kiss, but he was all too aware of the people around him. Even in a seemingly safe place like this, he knew better than to let his guard down. He didn’t have just himself to look after.

Dylan was a naturally protective person. But with Tilly, his protectiveness went into overdrive. The thought of anything happening to her… he shuddered.

He might not deserve her, but damned if he was letting that stop him from having her.

As the song came to an end, he led her back to the booth and grabbed her shawl and his jacket.

  “Let’s get you home.”

A flash of hurt passed over her face.

  He frowned, puzzled. “Tilly, I—”

Someone shoved against him from behind and he turned. The smaller guy who’d crashed into him took a drunken step back, holding up his hands.

“Hey, man, sorry.” He stumbled back another step, tripping into the chair behind him.

Dylan felt Tilly move to his side. He gently pushed her behind him. If she hadn’t been here, he would have escorted this douchebag out of the bar himself, but no way was he leaving her in here alone.

One of the nearby waitresses rushed off. Hopefully, she had the sense to go and grab one of the bouncers.

“Time to go home, buddy,” he said in a low voice.

Everyone around them had stopped what they were doing to watch, probably hoping for some drama.

“I ain’t-ain’t going anywhere,” the little man said. His shirt was stained and half-untucked.

“Yeah, you are,” Dylan said firmly, nodding to the large bouncer who approached.

“Says who?” the guy asked belligerently.

“Says me,” the bouncer rumbled before grabbing his arm and moving him toward the back door. The drunken guy just gaped up at him, obviously lost for words.

Tilly moved up beside him and slipped her hand into his. “Ouch, he’s really going to regret that in the morning.”

Dylan glanced down at her as she tugged on his hand. “Are you okay?” she asked him.

He raised his eyebrows in surprise. “Me? I’m fine. He barely even touched me. I would like to know who the hell kept serving him drinks though.” Still holding her hand, strode towards the back of the bar where the pool tables were. It was a lot quieter back here, with just a few people drinking and shooting pool.

“Why do you care?” Tilly asked.

  “Ahh—”

“Hey, Dylan, I stuck him in a taxi and sent him home. He could barely remember his own address.” Axl, the bouncer, walked toward him.

Dylan frowned. “Where’s Marc? Why wasn’t he managing this situation? And who kept serving that guy drinks?”

  “Dylan?”

Dylan turned to see his business partner striding toward him with a harried look on his face.

“What’s going on? Laura said there was an issue?” Marc asked.

“Where have you been?” Dylan asked as Axl retreated hastily. “Some idiot managed to keep getting drinks long after he should have been cut off.”

Tilly remained quietly at his side as Marc flinched.

“Shit, my sister called me and I had to leave. I’ll have a chat with the bar staff.”

“Marc, if you need extra help—”

“I don’t. I can handle this.” Marc looked at Tilly. “You’re busy, I see. I’ll leave the two of you alone.” He strode off without another word, leaving Dylan staring after him.

Tilly ran her hand up and down his arm soothingly. He gazed down at her and let out a deep breath. “Sorry about that.”

She shrugged. “Nothing to be sorry for. Do you own this place?”

“Marc and I are partners. I don’t tell many people because I’m supposed to be a silent partner.” He grimaced. “I didn’t do a very good job tonight.”

“He looks stressed,” she commented as Marc approached the bar staff, his shoulders tense.

“His mom is dying of cancer,” he explained.

“Oh, that’s horrible,” Tilly said sadly. “Is there anything we can do to help him?”

Dylan reached down and tipped up her chin. “You’re a good person, Tilly King.”

  She blushed. “Not always.”

“Hmm, tell me more,” he replied with a wink that made her smile. “I’d love to hear all about this bad side of yours.”

  She shook her head.

He brushed a dark strand of hair behind her ear. “Come on, gorgeous, let’s get you home.”

  Her face grew pensive.

“What did I say?” he asked, truly confused. Usually, he was pretty good at reading people, but that was twice
now that she’d appeared to be hurt by something he said and he had no idea what it was.

“Nothing,” she said, glancing out at the dance floor.

This wasn’t the place for a conversation. Placing his arm around her waist, he steered her through the bar until they were outside. Pausing briefly to wrap her shawl around her, he led her over to where he’d parked his truck. She was so petite that he had to help her up into the seat. Not that he was complaining. It gave him a great view of her amazing ass.

“I’d need a step stool to drive this thing,” she said as he climbed in the driver’s seat.

“You’ve just got some growing to do.”

She snorted. “The only growing I ever do is out, not up. My father and brothers are all well over six feet tall. I take after my mom.”

Dylan climbed in the driver’s side and started up his truck, heading towards her place. “Want to tell me what I said in there to hurt you?”

Tilly gazed out the window. Her shoulders were tense, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“Tilly, don’t lie to me,” he said in a low voice. He didn’t want to be too firm with her, but he wanted to let her know that lying was not an option. Neither was not answering.

She sighed. “I just thought the evening was going well. After we left that stuffy restaurant, that is.”

What was he missing? “So did I.”

“Oh, well then, why…” she trailed off, waving her hand around the truck.

“Why what? Oh, why did I suggest we go home?”

She nodded, still not looking at him. Dylan pulled off the road and parked the truck. Leaning over, he undid her seatbelt then pulled her along the bench seat. A streetlamp provided him with enough light to see her as he tipped her chin up.

“I didn’t suggest that we should head home because I wanted this night to end. On the contrary, I’d love to spend tonight and every other night with you, but I don’t think you’re ready for that just yet.” He ran his thumb over her cheek. “You’re tired, sweetheart. You look like you could collapse into bed and sleep for a week. What kind of man would I be to keep you up dancing and drinking all night when you’re exhausted?”
